Digital Signature Certificate


The digital signature is equivalent to a handwritten signature. The purpose of a digital signature is to solve the problem of tampering and impersonation in digital communications, e-forms, or electronic contracts or documents. Digital signatures can provide the assurances of evidence to origin, identity, and status of an electronic document. Digital signatures have the same legal significance in a similar manner as the more traditional forms of signed documents in many countries including India. In India, digital signatures are used in many e-Governance applications like online filing of Income Tax Returns, the formation of companies and their compliances, e-Tendering, etc.

Generally, in India, two types of DSCs

  • Class 2 DSC
  • Class 3 DSC


Class 2 DSCs are used for Income Tax Returns e-filing, MCA 21 & ROC, LLP, TDS Certificates, GST Returns, ePF Claims.

Since e-filing has been made mandatory in ROC filings, every Director or the signing authority or Designated Partner in the case of LLP needs to have its Digital Signature Certificate

It is mandatory to obtain a PAN-based Class 2 certificate for a person who is authorized to sign documents and file returns with the ROC

It is also compulsory for a person to obtain a PAN-based Class 2 certificate for filing his Income Tax return in India


A Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate is of the highest level type of DSC as it is issued only after the registrant’s identity verified by a Registration Authority.

A Class 3 certificate is an upgrade to the Class 2 certificate that has a higher level of importance.

The individual must possess a Class 3 DSC to participate in online auctions or submit e-tenders online.

One cannot submit e-tenders or participate in online auctions without a Class 3 DSC.
