foods or food products. The FSSAI has been incorporated under the Food Safety and
Standards Act, 2006. To carry on a food product business Food License Registration
certificate is required. You have to register under Food Safety and Standards Authority
of India (FSSAI) to manufacture, distribute and transport food products. FSSAI is an
authority established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of
India. FSSAI Certificate and FSSAI License are same which ensures the quality, purity

Types of Licenses
The main motive of formulating FSSAI has been to prescribe science-based standards for items of food and to control their manufacture, storage, sale, distribution, and import to ensure the availability of adulteration-free and wholesome food suitable for human consumption.
FSSAI Basic License
Eligibility criteria for this is Annual turnover of the business is less than 12 lakhs.
Slaughtering capacity of 2 large animals or 10 small animals (including sheep and goats) or 50 or lesser poultry birds per day.
It is valid from 1 To 5 Years.
FSSAI State License
Eligibility criteria for this is Annual turnover of the business is between 12 to 20 crores
Slaughtering capacity of anywhere between 2 to 50 large animals or 10 to150 small animals or 50 to up to1000 poultry birds per day.
It is valid from 1 To 5 Years.
FSSAI Central License
Eligibility criteria for this is Annual turnover of the business is above 20 crores
Meat processing units equipped to handle or treat more than 500 kg of meat daily or 150 MT annually
Importers who wish to import food items (incl. food ingredients and additives) for commercial use
It is valid from 1 To 5 Years.

Process of Basic Registration
Every small FBO must register itself with the Registering Authority (RA) by submitting an application form, along with the fees.
A Unique Application Reference Number will be generated.
RA may grant or reject the application – with reasons being recorded in writing. Within 7 days of the receipt of the application.
On the grant, the FBO may commence the business operations.
if decided necessary, the RA may issue a report for inspection. This is ordered within 7-days. And the inspection is conducted within 30 days.
If through the inspection, the inspecting FSO or agency is satisfied, the FSSAI number will be granted.
